Learning To Ride - FAQ

Q. How should I choose an instructor?

  • Your instructor should be able to train horses and riders to a level higher than your own competence. One way of determining this is to find out whether they compete and at what level. If their level is higher than your own, they will be able to help you improve your skill effectively.
  • However, not all instructors compete, and it is not essential. More important is the fact that they have the right knowledge, and can explain things effectively.
  • Ask for recommendations from experienced local riders.
  • Visit the instructor at their base, and try to watch a lesson they are taking. You will gain more from your lesson if you like, or at least respect, your instructor.

Q. How will I benefit from membership of BHS Cymru?

  • BHS Cymru is supported by five regional committees run by volunteers. Each regional committee plan and organise a yearly calendar of events such as cross country and dressage competitions, and pleasure rides, as well as talks, demonstrations and quiz nights.
  • Membership of BHS Cymru provides access to our many activities at reduced rates. This includes discounts on books and merchandise, and special offers through the bi-monthly BHS publication British Horse.
  • Further information from: www.bhscymru.co.uk.

Q. Why should I choose a BHS/ ABRS approved riding school?

A. Because you can be sure of:

  • the quality of the facilities used for teaching
  • the suitability of the horses and ponies
  • the quality (and qualifications) of the teaching staff
  • the safety procedures followed
