Advice on Mountain Riding
  • Leave gates as you find them
  • Stay on the track - most tracks are ancient, long-standing trails which cover the best and safest route
  • However, if livestock are on the track and do not move as you approach, give them a wide berth. Mountain stallions have occasionally been known to attack ridden horses if they see them as a threat to their mares or youngstock.
  • For safety reasons, tell someone where you are planning to ride, and when you expect to arrive at your destination. Be realistic about time - a straight track can take a lot longer than you think if there is a mountain in the way. Carry a mobile phone, and a map.
  • Take appropriate clothing and a waterproof coat - the weather can change quickly on the mountains.
  • Check your horse's tack and shoes before you set out.
  • If you come across an injured horse or pony - avoid approaching a wild hill pony. Do not put yourself at risk. Instead, contact the ILPH (tel: 0870 871 1927) or the RSPCA (tel: 0870 5555 999), both of which organisations can rescue and take away an injured equine.

Brecon Beacons

The British Horse Society awarded the National Park an Access award in 2005 for the most active National Park in opening up equestrian routes. With spectacular scenery a wealth of wildlife and some of the best riding in Europe riders are not disappointed.

There are trekking centres within the National Park offering half and full day treks, some can tailor make treks over two or three days and arrange overnight stops in bed & breakfast accommodation. You can bring your own horse on holiday too and stay at some of the many B&B’s for riders & horses.

Try the new Three Rivers Ride route which is a fantastic two day trek from Hay Bluff to the National Park Visitor Centre at Libanus. If you don’t want to ride then why not spend a day at the harness & trotting races or pay a visit to the horse & pony sanctuary.

Bridle Rides

bridlerides logo.gifBridle Rides arranges bridleway riding holidays for people with their own horses.

There are 17 different networks to choose from in England and Wales, which cover a variety of different countryside from the English Shires to more challenging areas like Exmoor and the North York Moors. You can either ride from one farmhouse to another, or choose a one-centre holiday with two or three day-rides out from the same base.

In Wales, we have a very popular Welsh Borders network, the bulk of which is in eastern Powys. We are planning to do some research riding in the Carmarthen/ Brechfa area this year, with the aim of opening a small new network either part way through 2007, or for the start of 2008. bridlerides pic.jpg

Cae Iago Riding Centre, Carmarthenshire

CaeIago.jpg

Cae Iago is one of the most popular horse riding holiday centres in Wales, offering pony trekking and trail riding holidays for adult riders with farmhouse accommodation in the stunningly beautiful, wild and remote Cambrian mountains, Carmarthenshire, mid Wales.

Cae Iago is a family run equestrian business established in 1968, specialising in adult riding holidays in mid Wales. Located on the edge of the beautiful Cambrian mountains in the heart of rural Wales, Cae Iago offers spectacular full week, short midweek (2-5 days) and weekend horse riding holiday breaks, as well as trail rides for the more experienced rider, riding longer distances over wilder terrain and stopping in different, comfortable accommodation with grazing each night.

Cae Iago offers an informal, relaxed horse riding holiday in mid Wales offering comfortable accommodation, and the chance to get as involved with looking after the horses, or not, as you please.

All packages consist of 4-5 hours of riding per day on safe, forward going Welsh cobs to suit all abilities, over some superb Welsh countryside, plus full board accommodation in our comfortable and homely farmhouse. Basic riding ability is recommended as we spend long hours in the saddle each day.

'A weekly ride from Cae Iago Riding Centre was a highlight of my time spent at Lampeter University. The horses and ponies were forward going but safe, and we enjoyed many a gallop across the grassy uplands and through forestry commission plantations in the Cambrian mountains, overlooking stunning views. I enjoyed the chance to ride and lead the ponies bareback to and from their grazing, and always looked forward to a warm welcome and tea and cake in the farmhouse after a ride. This is a well-run riding holiday centre with good horses in a fantastic riding area, and I could not recommend it enough.'

Penmachno Equestrian Project, Conwy

Snowdonia.jpgIn November 2003, a small group of riders from the Penmachno area, in then Upper Conwy Valley, became involved in a project to bring tourists and business into our community. Over recent years Penmachno has seen a decline in public facilities and a lack of economic growth, which has resulted in social isolation for many sections of the community.

By providing facilities which outside groups will want to utilize, we hope to encourage more people to come into the village of Penmachno.

We have received funding for the first phase of our project, which is to build a riding Arena in the forest above Penmachno. This will be free to the public and we will be holding events to raise money for maintenance on a regular basis.

Forest Enterprise is backing our project and has agreed to a site for the arena, and also the possibility of Canter Rides in the Forest above Penmachno. At present there is no schooling arena within a radius of 24 miles and those outside that boundary are privately owned.

We are also looking into opening up more forest trails and connecting routes to the rest of Snowdonia. The route between Ysbyty Ifan and Penmachno is now open to horseriders again, after it became impassable in places several years ago. This route offers some of the best views across the Snowdonia Mountain range.Snowdonia3.jpg
